HyBIS - Hydraulic Benthic Interactive Sampler

The HyBIS system has been designed to operate from the same deck handling and cable systems as used on extended high level capacity Towed Sonar Arrays. This enables significant savings to be made on time and costs.

In April this year HyBIS was deployed by Dr Bramley Murton and his expedition team from the NOC, Southampton to discover and film for the first time the world’s deepest undersea volcanic vents located 5000m (3.1 miles) down in the Cayman Trough in the Caribbean.

“Our eyes and arms on the seafloor, HyBIS is remotely-controlled from the ship, carrying cameras into the depths and bringing samples back for us – but at a fraction of the operating cost of traditional remotely-operated vehicles”

Dr Bramley Murton.
